The Yard Moves function is available to the driver if the carrier allows it. To use the yard moves function in the ELD a driver must be in the on duty not driving status this is a Canadian Technical Standard and cannot be changed The yard move allows a driver to move within a yard area below the speed of 32km/h.

The Personal Use function is available to the driver if the carrier allows it. To use the Personal use function in the ELD a driver must be in the off duty status this is a Canadian technical standard and cannot be changed and the Personal Use is a max of 75km a day .

Drivers who don’t drive outside of a 160km radius from their home terminal will not be required to be in compliance with the ELD mandate. If a driver at any time
needs to operate out of the 160km radius they must posses the following:
-14 days plus the current logs on a certified ELD system
-Vehicle being operated has a certified ELD system in it

The driver drives, or is instructed by the motor carrier to drive, a commercial vehicle within a radius of 160 km of the home terminal; A temporary terminal can be
used. The driver returns to the home terminal each day to begin a minimum of 8 consecutive hours of off-duty time; the motor carrier maintains accurate and legible
records showing, for each day, the cycle the driver followed and on-duty times and keeps those records and the supporting documents relating to those records for
a minimum period of 6 months after the day on which each record was recorded; the driver is not driving a commercial vehicle under a permit issued under these
Regulations or is driving under an exemption issued under the Act.

Section 81(2) of Canadian Commercial vehicle Drivers HOS Regulations SOR 2005/313

Any ELD that is certified for use in the US will be required to also be certified in accordance with Transport Canada’s Technical Standards for ELDs in order to be acceptable for use in Canada after June 12, 2021.

Rental trucks used for 30 days or less are exempt. Drivers who “pick up” incorrect unassigned driving time can “put it back” if they incorrectly assigned it to themselves. Personal use option must disable if the driver has used 75 km a day ELD must warn drivers when they are running out of HOS. Roadside transfer will send a data package to an email address that is typed in by the driver and will include a PDF file of the logs and a .csv file that can be deciphered ELDs will need to be accredited by a third-party certification body.
