The current deadline for the Canadian ELD Mandate is January 1, 2023
We have launched a fully CCMTA and FMCSA (USA) compliant, certified ELD solution that fully integrates with GPS Tracking to give you all the telematics information you need to ditch the paper daily log and keep your fleet on track.
The ELD Mandates Explained
For the USA the FMCSA’s ELD Mandate took effect in the United States on December 18, 2017. Canada’s ELD mandate started on June 12, 2021, with a focus on education and awareness, and the enforcement penalties will take effect January 2023.
A paper log used to record Hours of Service (HOS) is no longer acceptable when recording driving hours, rest time, and on-duty hours. Instead, HOS must be recorded using Electronic Logging Devices, alternatively known as ELDs. Any ELD used to meet the federal mandate must be certified by a recognized third party to ensure devices meet technical requirements, which is a major difference from the U.S. rules that allow manufacturers to self-certify.
This third-party certification requirement was introduced to help eliminate the potential for manipulating Hours of Service data. The ultimate goal of ELDs is to make roadways safer by reducing the risk of truck drivers suffering from fatigue, but they also save fleet managers time and money – two of our most precious assets.

Drivers complete daily pre-trip and post-trip inspection reports using our Titan GPS ELD app on any Smartphone or Tablet. Electronic DVIR eliminates unnecessary paperwork.
Automated and Paper-free
Titan GPS’ ELD solutions also support fully compliant International Fuel Tax Agreement (IFTA) reporting. Fleets that cross provincial and/or state lines are likely already familiar with IFTA, and the hassle that can come with tracking fuel use and preparing quarterly reports.
ECU-connected solutions from Titan GPS streamline IFTA reporting by automatically calculating the distance your commercial vehicles travel in each jurisdiction by odometer or GPS location, ensuring accurate records and reducing the risk of error or incorrect paperwork.

The Canadian ELD mandate has been in effect since June 12, 2021, with a progressive enforcement period that has been extended to January 1, 2023. This means penalties for non-compliance will begin January, 2023 and until then enforcement by Transport Canada will consist of education and awareness.
The mandate, itself, aims to improve road safety across Canadian provinces and territories. It requires commercial motor vehicle drivers subject to Hours of Service (HOS) regulations to use electronic logging devices (ELDs). To level-set, an ELD is defined as a device or technology that automatically records a driver’s driving time to better track, manage, share and improve accuracy and efficiency in the driver’s record of duty status.
Transport Canada states that federally regulated carriers are required to migrate into ELD solutions. Currently this translates to over 150K commercial vehicle drivers across Canada.
For US, FMCSA clears the topic as:
“The ELD applies to most motor carriers and drivers who are currently required to maintain records of duty status (RODS) per Part 395, 49 CFR 395.8(a). The rule applies to commercial buses as well as trucks, and to Canada- and Mexico-domiciled drivers.”
Mandate exemptions include short-term rentals, commercial vehicles operated within a certain radius and are not required to comply with HOS regulations,
Carriers with other exemptions that has been issued by authorities.
Planning your fleet’s migration to electronic logging devices is not an easy undertaking. Titan GPS can is the top solution for the process as you:
- Scope your ELD migration project
